Department of Aquaculture(AQC)
Brief overview of the Department:

The department of aquaculture is one of the core departments of the College of Fisheries, CAU(I) and is at the forefront of sustainable aquaculture technologies and augmentation of aquaculture productivity in the northeastern region which is greatly deficit in both local fish production as well as food & feed grain production. In this regard, the department is actively engaged in UG & PG teaching and research as well as capacity building of the line department officials and master trainers of NGOs. Emphasis is always on to make all these programme relevant to field conditions. The department currently offers eight (8) courses comprising 20 (12+8) credits and additional 20 (0+20) creditsunder “Student READY” for the undergraduate students. In particular, the department has developed a well synchronized semester-long “Experiential Learning Program” module on “Integrated Semi-intensive Aqua-farming” for UG students. The programme has consistently generated profits between Rs.3-5 lakhs. The department has been offering “Master of Fisheries Science (Aquaculture)” programme w.e.f. Academic Year 2010-11 (Intake: 5) as per the model PG syllabus of ICAR, New Delhi whilePh.D. (Aquaculture) program will be starting w.e.f. Academic Year 2020-21. The main focus of research efforts of the department of aquaculture is to develop, evaluate and refine aquaculture technologies and/or package of practices for food and ornamental fishes utilizing local aquatic and agro-bio-resource that can be adopted by farmers of the northeastern region. Towards this, the department has developed/is developing complete package of seed production, nursing, rearing and grow-out practices and feed and feeding of priority food and ornamental fishes with local bio-resources so as to make the production and productivity enhancement sustainable in true sense.
