Prof. Ratan Kumar Saha

Dean College of Fisheries

On the 12th Day of May 2021, I have taken over the charge of the Dean of College of Fisheries, Lembucherra under the aegis of Central Agricultural University (Imphal). The College of Fisheries operates with three functional domains viz. teaching, research, and extension education for educating, training, and developing competent professionals on one hand and science-led vis-a-vis technology-driven productivity enhancement and diversification in the field of fisheries and aquaculture on the other. Standing on the premise of already attained acclamation at the national level for its professional performance, with the support of excellent infrastructure and state-of-the-art teaching as well as laboratory facilities, the college is now progressively striding ahead to turn out to be a globally recognized player in its mandated functional areas. The fisheries and aquaculture of the North-Eastern Region (NER) has immense potential due to abundant natural resources and rich faunal biodiversity. The College of Fisheries is at the forefront in developing region-specific technologies, resources mapping, and the transfer of technologies to the end-users. In fact, the college has developed 21 technologies and several other technologies/packages of practices are in the pipeline. The RKVY-RAFTAAR scheme, Mobile based agroadvisory system in Tripura (MatsyaVarta), Aqua Clinic and Aquapreneurship Development Programme (AC&ADP), TRIFED, DST, NAIP (ICAR), DBT, NFDB and several other schemes/projects of the Government of India are being implemented by the College for entrepreneurship development as well as for the development of Fisheries Sector in NER of India. I appeal to the younger generation to choose ‘Fisheries Science’ as their professional field, which would indeed provide lucrative employability in days to come. The college is also striding towards adopting and implementing several other progressive measures, including the adoption of the ‘New Education Policy’, academic collaboration with the neighbouring countries, commercialization of the developed technologies, patenting, aquapreneurship etc.

As an extraordinary challenge is being faced worldwide due to the massive outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic and the effects of the same on the educational landscape of this college is of no exception. In this tough time, the college has already adopted appropriate measures to ensure delivery of the educational content through digital means, besides maintaining the students’ physical/mental health. The students of this college have shown tremendous resilience, restraint, and understanding during this challenging and stressful time. I am happy to note that the students of this college have been consistently performing better in AIEEA-PG and bagged the overall top positions in 2013, 2016 & 2019, and in the UPS category in 2020. In the SRF examination, 2020, three students of the disciplines of Fisheries Resource Management and Fish Genetics and Breeding bagged the first rank in different categories. It is my foremost prerogative to contribute to the progress of this college to a new height as well as continuing the legacy of the premiere fisheries educational institute in the country under the dynamic leadership of Dr. Anupam Mishra, Hon'ble Vice-Chancellor, Central Agricultural University (Imphal). I wish and expect that the college will yield many more successes and achievements with the cooperation of all staff and students in the days to come, which will in turn contribute to the progress of the entire NEH region of the country.
